Join the Race or Donate Shoes during Hershey Track Meet
(Longview, TX) The City of Longview Parks and Recreation Department invites boys and girls to participate in the Hershey Track Meet at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 23. The Hershey Track Meet will be held at Jack Murphy Bear Stadium, 2201 W. Gay Ave., in Gladewater, Texas. This local track meet is part of the national Hershey Track & Field Games. Qualified winners may advance to the state Hershey Track Meet in Austin, and to the national event in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This year marks the 35th anniversary of this national event.
The competition is open to boys and girls that are ages 9 to 14 as of December 31, 2012. Events include: the 50, 100, 200, and 400 meter dash; 800 and 1600 meter run; 4 X 100 meter relay; standing long jump; and softball throw. Not all event are available for each age group, please see the registration packet for details.
There is no registration fee for the track meet, but the deadline to register is Wednesday, May 16. A copy of the child’s birth certificate is due at the time of registration for age verification. The event is open to the public; general admission for spectators is $2.
In addition, the community is invited to donate used athletic shoes to be recycled for future use as playgrounds, basketball courts, running tracks, and other athletic equipment. Donations of athletic shoes only will be accepted during the event on May 23. Any brand athletic shoe is acceptable. However, damp or muddy shoes, cleats, dress shoes, sandals, and flip-flops will not be accepted.
