The Longview Comprehensive Plan is a long-term planning effort that serves as "our City's roadmap for the future." As a long-range planning tool, it is intended for use by staff, decision-makers, and citizens to direct the growth and physical development of the community for 10 to 20 years.

The Comprehensive Plan is not intended to focus only on the physical development of Longview, but rather the overall vision for Longview as a livable and economically vibrant community.

How the Longview Comprehensive Plan was Adopted:

The planning effort for the plan began in Fall 2013 with the creation of an ad-hoc task force called the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee. The process included a great amount of public input to create the draft over an 18-month period of time including public meetings, surveys, and conversations with civic clubs, schools, neighborhood groups, and sub-committees. An initial draft of the plan was presented at a community meeting on October 28, 2014. Based on additional community input and comments from the general , the plan was updated by the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee and the general public. The Comprehensive Plan was presented and approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission on February 17, 2015 and City Council on March 12, 2015.

Implementing the Plan:

The Longview Comprehensive Plan was not written so that it could just "sit on a shelf." Instead, the document is intended as a planning tool for City Council, boards and commissions, and city staff. As such, the elements of the Comprehensive Plan will be referenced in determining major decisions such as budgeting, planning, and project selection. The final chapter of the Comprehensive Plan is an Implementation Matrix which prioritizes objectives as short-term, mid-term, and long-term projects. Following the adoption of the plan, one of the first actions taken by City Council was the establishment of the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee as a standing committee rather than an ad-hoc task force in order to continue to encourage the implementation of the plan.
