Police Explorer Club Post 202

The Police Explorer program is an exciting career development program sponsored by the Longview Police Department which provides young men and women the opportunity to learn about the possible career choices available in law enforcement today. Explorers are afforded the opportunity to learn and become acquainted with police techniques and procedures, both in classroom and field environments, including actual "hands-on" field experience. Many former Police Explorers have gone on to law enforcement careers at all levels, including working for their local police department or with State and Federal agencies. 

Designed by the Boy Scouts of America, and administered through the Learning for Life organization, the Explorer program helps to build good character, promotes good citizenship and encourages participants to develop personal and mental fitness. The program gives youth the means and opportunity to share thoughts and ideas with others their age, as well as with caring adults who share their time with them. 

The Longview Police Explorer Program is designed around the following six experience areas:

  • Appreciation of the Outdoors

Post Activities

Post 202 Explorers have been called on to assist the Police Department in various activities including crime prevention events, parades, special event traffic management, and during emergencies.


Teens and young adults interested in becoming a Police Explorer must meet the following requirements:
  • Must be at least 11 years of age and not older than 14 years of age and completed the 5th grade.  Once the Explorers in the Club complete the 8th grade they move on to the Explorer Post
  • Must maintain a minimum "C" average in their academic classes at school
  • Must not have been arrested
  • Have good moral character
  • Must register with the Boy Scouts of America (taken care of through the Club)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it cost anything to join?

There is an initial, one-time fee of $35.00 for registration. Other associated costs with joining
the Explorer Club may be a nominal uniform fee. Some Explorers choose to purchase additional equipment, i.e. flashlight, boots and leather gear.

If this is a Boy Scouts program, can girls join?

Yes. Young women have always been a part of the Boy Scouts of America.

Who is the Advisory Staff?

Post Advisers are police officers and other volunteers and employees of the Longview Police Department. Adviser training is provided by the Boy Scouts of America. Currently, the Post 202 Advisers are:

  • Officer Jose Montalvo
  • Sgt. Mark Alford

I'm thinking about joining, can I come to a meeting to find out more?

Sure. You are welcome to attend any of the regular meetings. Coming to a meeting is an excellent way to find out more about Exploring and Post 202, meet the Advisers and talk to other Explorers about their experiences. Meetings are held twice a month on Monday nights from 6:30 pm to 9 pm at the Police building located at 1001 W. Fairmont St .

Can I bring a friend?

Of course. Our new Explorers often bring along a best friend, classmate, or even a brother or sister. You can even bring along a parent so they can see what the program is like.

What do I need to do to join?

Basically, just come to a meeting. If you meet the requirements listed above and decide to
join, you will need to complete an application. You can obtain an application from any of the
Post Advisers. As mentioned above, there is a one-time $35.00 registration fee.
