On Tuesday November 17, 2015 at 2:47 a.m., Longview Police were dispatched to an Alarm at Academy Sports Center located at 445 Forest Square. When officers arrived they found that the glass door had been broken and it appeared someone had gained entry into the store. Officers located the suspect at the rear of the building. The suspect, armed with an M-4 rifle, exchanged gunfire with the three Longview Police Officers. The suspect fled to the roof of the nearby Best Buy store located at 422 West Loop 281 where he climbed onto the roof of the store. While officers were searching for the suspect he phoned 9-1-1 and told them he was on the roof of the business and had been shot. Police were able to secure the area and Longview Fire Department medics removed him from the roof of the store. He was transported to Longview Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The suspect has been identified as 35 year-old Nathan David Lanicek, of Longview. The investigation of the shooting has now been turned over to the Texas Rangers, and they will conduct the investigation to completion. While the Texas Rangers conduct their investigation, the Longview Police Department’s Internal Affairs Office will also be performing their own internal investigation to ensure that all Longview Police Department policies and procedures were followed. Once the investigation is completed by the Texas Rangers, it will be sent to the Gregg County District Attorney’s Office for review and presentation to a Gregg County Grand Jury. The three officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave as a part of this ongoing investigation. ?As the investigation continues more factual details, including the names of the Police Officers involved, will be released.
